Age to Age - 12

SPOKEN AND WRITTEN OF 12

COMMENTS FROM ONE WHO WAS ONCE 12

InAWord_Brian_2004.pdf The ages set-up for "Age to Age" apply to given ages of my children in 2009; my youngest, Brian-Wesley is 12 - thus, this page is dedicated to him.
InAWord_Ageof12_2004.pdf I was once 12 too; and in keeping with the other pages, have included some of my experience (recollection) of this age; what's certain is that 1973 was an exciting year.
InAWord_Paydirt_2005.pdf; "Pay-dirt" is a term that evidently comes from the mining industry and, in particular, gold or possibly other precious metals.    My rationale for adding this In A Word letter probably has something to do
InAWord_Playground_2005.pdf During the years that I was privileged to be a part of my children's lives, playgrounds were front-in-center part of our experience; and one day, I decided to write a letter about many (not all) of
InAWord_Reaping_2005.pdf In the terms of agriculture, "reaping" comes after preparing and sowing the dirt; and in the spiritual realm, it has do with what we receive - in view of what we've sown.  The word tells us that we reap
InAWord_Relays_2005.pdf In 2006 I actually bought him a blue baton.  Being in a sporting goods store in St. Augustine, the impulse occurred to me and, so I thought, why not?   This along with some other sports items filled-the-bill for his 10th birthday.
InAWord_Relevance_2005.pdf This letter may require some explanation:  A simple exercise of association is aimed at drawing attention to the fact that I am my children's father.  When this fact is seriously considered, the idea
Brian-Wesley_10-10-05.pdf Many letters have been written to my children through the years - often at the risk of showing in court for no good; still, I have continued writing for the simple and altruistic reason that the intention
Brian-Wesley_12-16-05.pdf I had speculated that Brian still liked sports because he took a rather natural interest at a young age.   Writing on the subject was not enough however, as I bought him a couple of footballs and
Brian-Wesley_01-11-06.pdf During 2005, I established a color for each of my children; for Brian-Wesley, the color is blue (surprised?).   Not that he is little boy blue, but instead, a fleet-footed fellow with blue eyes.
Brian-Wesley_03-30-08.pdf Last year - in another risky venture - I mailed my children monies for their birthday.  Although the checks were cashed immediately, the letters (as enclosed) became yet another document for the
Ages12_hkirkrainer.pdf At age 12, I was still a cool dude; I had not entered the awkward years of youth, but was still riding the fame of my short-lived and rather uneventful sport's days.  Still, there was so much more...

12"AGE TO AGE"  is a tribute to each posted age; and for this time, that age is 12.   Each month or so, the age will be changed and, in turn, will be updated either from previous writings, such as In A Word, or will be developed from scratch.   How we examine and reflect on our past is sometimes helpful in understanding the age in general and those who are themselves passing through in person.

The year was 1973.   Our country was ending a long conflict in Vietnam, the elected President had been impeached - and subsequently resigned; and our culture had greatly changed.   The choice of the "12" font (to the right) is a discrete characterization of the '70's with longer hair styles, flared pants (call bell-bottoms), bigger collars, wild colors and other changes in style left to the imagination.   The style might be called "groovy"...or something like that...

In that year, my school was Beaufort Junior High School (that was before "middle schools") and my primary teacher was Ms. Perry; she was a small woman but, let me tell you, she could swing a paddle...and she did!   I also had two teachers for English and History that were sisters.  My school (I attended two different schools), was built on a swamp (or near it); and so the familiar smell of the tide-water or marshes could be smelled with the weather was right.  This second of the two schools was called Robert Smalls - but because of the frequent odor - it was nicknamed Robert Smells.   My P.E. teacher was discharged from the Marine Corps; his name was "Crowshaw"- but we called him Coach Coldslaw...but not to his face.

With two teenage siblings in the home, life was always interesting.   Between their music and other lifestyle, I could learn and enjoy much.   Usually, they did not want me around them - and would make that pretty clear.  But being the brat that I was, determination usually found a way.   There is much more to share...
