A Word From Saint Augustine

A WORD FROM THE SAINT COMMENTS AND CONFESSIONS
Augustine_GoodBeauty_01-08-09.pdf How do we define or describe beauty; what is it that defines beauty for us?  Is beauty only skin-deep or does it go much further than that - to the heart and soul?
Augustine_WhatisTrue_12-31-08.pdf With all the information out there, what do we believe?  How do we know what is true and what is not; or for that matter, how do we discern that something is of the truth or
Augustine_TiethatBinds_01-20-09.pdf The tie that binds is our faith in Christ; it binds us to Christ, our salvation, and it binds us to what Saint. Augustine calls the invisible church body.   Without faith, there is no
Augustine_JusticeWithheld_02-04-09.pdf "Charity is no substitute for justice withheld" - so the Saint told us.   Without truth, there is no justice; and without justice, there is no truth...which leaves what?
InAWord_Grace_2005.pdf Grace enables our salvation and relationship with God; yet it not a substitute or replacement for our humble commitment to him and love for him.   God's justice...
Augustine_AbstinenceOverModeration_02-14-09.pdf Which is easier, or more effective:  abstinence or moderation?
Augustine_ConfessionOfEvil_02-20-09.pdf Finding this quote in an article on politics, the concept of confession is Biblical; the saint tells us that the first good step of dishonesty is confession - and only then, can healing
Augustine_WishtobeGreat_03-06-09.pdf What does "great" mean to you; and if you aspire to be great, how do you plan to get there?   To be first, you must be willing to last - according to Jesus...
Augustine_WishtoRise_04-03-09.pdf In keeping the last posting, the message is contradictory to "world-thinking"; that is, to win, you must be willing to lose; and, sometimes, losing is the beginning of living...
Coming next:   "A Deep Man..."   Ralph Waldo Emerson said:  "A deep man believes that the evil eye can wither, that the heart's blessing can heal, and that love overcomes all odds."  But what is a "Deep Man..."?

"Faith is to believe what you do not see; the reward of this faith is to see what you believe."

"A Word from Saint Augustine" is inspired by three things:

First, the saint himself, his writing and some selected quotes.

Second, the men - or laymen - who faithfully served the St. Johns County Detention Center through Bible Study and similar Christian messages.   I cannot say enough about the local priest, and his parish (Dominique, Jack, Tom and company) in the weekend studies; and the personal conviction of Ken Vensel who came each Tuesday.   What I witnessed was in keeping with Matthew 25:  "When I was in prison you came to visit me..."

Last but never least are those who sent letters and prayed for me while waiting to my hearing for attempting to contact my children.   I cannot say that I enjoyed the experience of jail, but I can say that if I had to go to jail I would much rather do it for righteousness than for something less; and I consider attempts to be a parent to my children as righteousness because our first call of service is to our family, our children.
