"There
are three constants in life...change, choice and principles."
- Stephen Covey
Making Good Choices is not that easy. But as Mr. Covey reminds us, the constants of life call for making choices - however difficult. What is KEY to making Choices is our principles - or our standards for living; and ideally, those principles are not constantly shifting or being blown by the wind.
Making Good Choices can apply to just about anything from the trivial to the one, and one-only; but when the phrase becomes most critical or important is when the outcome is of equal potential or seriousness. We make Choices everyday, but we also make one-time Choices too. As parents, we may have the opportunity to help teach our children how to make good Choices; but we may not...
Choices involve two or more possibilities - but sometimes only one opportunity or event to choose or decide. We may call this one-time opportunity a "crucial decision"...assuming that we understand it's importance. Other Choices fall into the lesser category and, while important, may not be crucial.
Indiana Jones, The Last Crusade offers an example of Choices: the knight (guarding the grail) is the only one aware of which grail is authentic (the one used by Christ); greed is the culprit for the worst of Choices - a wrong grail - that cause immediate death. The knight replies with Christ's grail, "You have chosen wisely", to confirm the best of Choices. Obviously this was a crucial decision: one chose poorly and suffered the most terminating of possibilities; the other chose the cup of Christ and reaped healing...life.
Sometimes our Choices cannot be assessed (or completely considered) based on the immediate outcome; but must be weighed over time; the end result - or true outcome - may may never be fully assessed...as it may be clouded by circumstances or conditions created of ourselves and/or others. Choices have risks or unknowns.
