The family and fathers has been a chief concern of mine.    Having lost my family through divorce, the events alone are enough to concern one of this vital matter to the health of a society.

It may seem alarmist - even obsessive - to go on about the matters of the family; but if (and as) the family matters to our culture, the threats and risks cannot be overlooked and, I believe, are worth the time, attention and effort of many who are at the forefront of addressing each...     With a heavy heart and a developing mind on the matter, I begin this page having first written about it through the In A Word letters - and since then - with intermittent attention and some effort of my own..
BEYOND CULTURE WARS - Is America a Mission Field or Battlefield?  by Machael S. Horton (1994)
Dedication of his book is to J. Gresham Machen.  The dated book - introduced to me at Christ Church, Jacksonville, FL -  examines the health of the Protestant church  of America with several opening questions, some history, and the present day disposition in the postmodern era.    Clearly defining his position as that as evangelical, Horton is addressing the like readers in hope to... ...reawaken some to the mission of the church - not to change the world through a self-righteous life, but to offer hope to the world as one (or many) made righteous through Christ.   What remains questionable is whether the church (or churches) will pursue the high-calling of Christ's bride or, to use this metaphor, to prostitute itself by living to the shifting standards of society - rather than the veritable values of the Christ.
Well, the depth and degree of understanding of the author becomes immediately clear as he sets out on describing the present state of the church(1994) in the context of Christianity dating back in time.    The backdrop of the church is necessary to... ...to see what has brought it to a level of division -- or shift through a series of events and circumstances.   Somewhere in this division are those who hold to more intellectual or learning, while to other more emotion and overt zeal.   Still, there are some who think... ...and practice the faith of influence over culture and its many ills -- the intent of which seems to have some ills of its own.   What should the church be doing?

A myth is something that, though thought to be true, is not necessarily so.  Horton presents a collection of myths in the continued presentation of his book; these myths have been embraced as some level by segments of the Christian population and, on the belief... ...that the myths are true, have formed a basis for approaching the secular culture and society of the day.    In his insights and understanding, the myths are debunked -- which brings to bear the potential faults and fallacies of some who approach the influence Wars_FiveMythsC2_07-13-09.pdf

through politics or by any other means than the fundamental discovery of truth.

Who is the churches enemy?   The immediate answer would be Satan; but in this chapter, the discussion of the enemy takes us into the complexity of the culture; into the basic call for the church to in the world but not of the world.     Described as Secularism, the worldliness for which to the church should be set apart is, for our culture, a bosom buddy - giving some cause to consider that the church is its enemy.  Evidence of this condition can be found in the self-fulfillment drive of the contemporary church - where  Wars_EnemyC3_07-21-09.pdf

God becomes the source of our desires - of self-fulfillment.

The early church was instructed by the apostles to pray for their rulers -- though these same rulers were exerting widespread persecution toward believers of The Way.   How than shall we live?  What of our present relationship with the state; and as  far as the future in the Post-modern age, lessons may be in store for Christians who face or may endure persecution.   In the worst of times, the church can ironically experience the best of times - where obedience is aided by dependence of God over sparse... ...or scarce alternatives.   In this place, the church is best able to be a positive influence in the present kingdoms of man...while anticipating the City of God.

In the basic question, "Whatever happened to the Gospel?"  is the noted reaction of our society to "turn to an earthly kind of wisdom (political or civil righteousness) when the Gospel is staring us right in the face."  What of this habit - this obvious lack...   ...of faith?   As Mike takes us in the answer, distinction is drawn to both the Law and the Gospel; not the gospel that pertains to social or political-based reform, but the real Gospel aimed at changing lives....souls.    The "confusion" comes in the notion that reform... ...must occur in the political forum -- as a kind national revival; yet, should the Gospel be attached to such reform over the sovereign work or God?

"Secularism" continues to be a key term in this book and chapter.   What is it but, very simply, the absence or abolition of any acknowledgement of God as supernatural if existent.    Citing two movements as the cause of this condition, Horton writes that... ...the first is the Enlightenment, and the second, is post-modernity.  More is added in the posting to explain - along with the audio as an abstract.    On the basis that God is Creator and humankind is His creation, the chapter takes the reader through the continuing... ...journey to examine the culture wars of today - though with a some attention to history a (the Enlightenment) and the scriptures.

Mr. Horton reminds the reader that:  "Without any knowledge of God, there can be no fear of God, and without any fear of God, there can be know hallowing of God's name."   These conditions cast immediate attention on the church (rather than society) ...and theology (rather than morality).   The church and individual believers must repent; the restoration of the human heart through the humility of our individual sin.   As each heart is restored to God, the influence of the church as a counter-culture will be restored too.    Wars_GodsNameC7_09-10-09.pdf

The Church does not have the power of the state but, more than that, the power of God through the Gospel of Christ.    Reformation begins in the human heart....the church of Christ.

Michael quotes John Calvin:   "It is not nature, but the corruption of nature."  Since The Fall, humankind has been born into corruption; yes, born to sin.... Then what of the Kingdom Come; what of the day of Christ's return...to establish his kingdom?   In this chapter, Mr. Horton...  ...continues in describing another aspect of the Culture Wars; another piece of the promises of God regarding the present world and the future kingdom of God.    Don't forget, that the present world belongs to Satan (hence, a fallen world).   Sure, the world has beauty... ...and majesty - it has wonder and creation that continues to puzzle and ponder questions.   And among these creations is the church that waits for Christ's return.

Michael begins the chapter by expressing the contemporary contradiction that God exists for his own happiness, not ours, and that we, in fact, are merely part of that universal design to bring pleasure to the Holy One of Israel.    He expresses his opinion that "the church growth movement has gotten wrong the insistence that the primary purpose of the church is to meet the "felt needs" of the un-churched, rather than to teach and lead...to be worshiping the one true God..."   Wars_FeltNeedsC9_10-05-09.pdf

Can government legislate morality?   Should the churches be engaged in politics with the idea of "taking back America"?   Let's read on to think about these questions.

Michael begins with statement that today we no longer believe that humanity needs to be saved from the wrath of God as much as we believe in the salvation of America from a loss of pride and self-esteem. Where a people refuses to accept grace,    there is the natural response of forgetting that God is the judge; and, counter to that, becoming the judge of God and, for the church, the judge of others.    We think that the greatest sins of the day are committed by unbelievers, when in reality,  the church is in  Wars_GreatestNeedC10_10-16-09.pdf

disarray theologically and ethically.  When a generation breaks from its beliefs, it does not immediately plunge into moral anarchy...but by the 2nd generation, much has changed...

"Breaking the Tempter's Spell:  What spiritual warfare is really about" is the continuing work of Michael Horton in the book (1994) about culture wars.    He writes:  "we cannot bring in the kingdom or "Christian America" by our zealous works...." Warning the reader of the misguided view and practices of some with the evangelical church, Michael reminds us that the faithful are to place their faith in God, his Word -- and not the politics or state of the modern society.  Should the church be actively pursuing the...  Wars_SpiritualWarfareC11_11-06-09.pdf

taking back of America? Or should church be about the business of God; preaching the good news and practicing the faith of the fathers that transcends our modern society.

Our Engdangered Values America's Moral Crisis... by Jimmy Carter (2005)
Dedication of his book is to "our children and grandchildren for whom America's basic moral values must be preserved".   How fitting that a book of culture would be dedicated to the future generations.   With similar concern, I begin the book on which he views each issue:  drawing upon his past, given the present, and with pause for what lies ahead.   Our country is (and has been) on a certain tract and perhaps, to many, a dangerous one...

Yet, my belief is that such uncertain and concerning times brings out the best in those who have a hope greater than the present or predicted future.   The difference may lie in the fact of a future and eternal government versus a present and uncertain one.   For the author, the two are "inextricably entwined"; even so, he offers an unapologetic view of the "present" to enlightened the reader (s) as to the "tract"... in the context of his understanding of the future and eternal government to come...

"When I stop and think about what is really happening in the American culture, I am also concerned..."

- Gene Getz, The Measure of a Man  (1995)

Culture can be somewhat iridescent with its variation of ideas, views, opinions, standards and so forth.   This diversity is sometimes strength where one complements the other, but sometimes it is weakness where the one conflicts with the other; but what is certain - and sometimes constant - is that one or the other changes.

"Don't become so well adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking."

- The Message, Book of Romans, chapter 12

Though the saying, "some things (or people) never change" may have its credit, my belief is that nothing stays the same if examined in due time or course.    Another saying, "the world is constantly changing" does not mean that "history want repeats itself" in one way or the other.   Who would argue that understanding history isn't important but, at the same time, who can argue that history always applies?

"Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you."

- The Message, Book of Romans, chapter 12

For the universal and timeless human (pictured at right), perspectives on the past reside in his mind (or by learning), positions on the present are all around him, and possibilities on the post are somewhere ahead of him.    With a collection of perspectives from the past - that include some aspect of the present - he ponders the possibilities of the post, or future.  Also in his past - and thus in the present and post - is the conscience or personal standards with its variation...of good and badness, light and darkness, strengths and weakness, constants and changes.
